Tom Amery

Tom Amery is Managing Director & Partner of The Watercress Company, the UK’s largest grower of watercress with specialist beds in Alresford, Cranborne and Dorchester, and Jerez in Spain.
Tom studied Commercial Horticulture at Writtle College in 1995, after leaving school at 15 and starting his career in market gardening.
Following a trip to Africa & Australasia that ended in 1999 he applied for a Trainee Technical Manager position at The Watercress Company. From here he progressed to Sales & Technical Director, then in 2007 to Managing Director and finally Partner in 2011. Over 26 years he has led the business through significant change, resulting in it attracting 80% of current market share and it is still expanding.
Tom’s years of experience and dedication to watercress production, supported by his extremely talented staff, ensures there is no other business that knows more about watercress in the UK. He admits watercress has become his life, and that his wife even jokes she accepts the watercress beds are his second home.
Tom loves developing the team and specifically new talent, discovering new innovative research into watercress health, and adapting growing practices with the team to overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Clinical research on watercress
For several decades watercress has been repeatedly been the subject of clinical research due to its natural health properties. Although we have invested into some of this research most of the work being done is outside of our influence and based solely on interest in the clinical applications of the components of watercress. When we learn of new studies into the possible clinical applications of watercress and its components we offer our enthusiasm and support in terms of product supply and technical knowledge and we have thereby embarked on some very exciting collaborations. Along the way we have met some incredible scientists and researchers who have helped to uncover the natural benefits of watercress. Together with these teams we aim to explain their findings to a wider public.
